Our Pilots
These guaranteed income pilots provide direct cash— no strings attached— to DMV residents, centering caregivers, survivors, and historically marginalized communities.
Mother Up
Led by Mothers Outreach Network, the MotherUp program is a multi-phase guaranteed income pilot focused on supporting Black mothers impacted by DC’s family policing system. It includes four privately funded pilots, two of which are supported by independent research.
The first cohort launched in May 2023 following recruitment in late 2022. Phases 2 and 3 are being independently evaluated through randomized controlled trials and in-depth qualitative research to explore how guaranteed income impacts family stability, parental wellbeing, and economic freedom.
Participants receive unconditional cash assistance for 3 years—no strings attached, no work requirements.

CashRx
CashRx is Bread for the City’s first in-house guaranteed income program, providing equity-based cash support to medical patients. The goal: improve health outcomes by addressing the social determinants of health—like access to food, housing, and stability.
Funded by the Greater Washington Community Foundation’s Health Equity Fund, the Diane & Norman Bernstein Foundation, and the Hartfield Foundation, CashRx is an innovative step toward advancing health equity in DC.
Let’s Go DMV
Let’s GO DMV! is a guaranteed income pilot supporting hospitality workers in the DC region who were hit hardest by the economic impacts of COVID-19. Sparked by a vision from ROC-DC worker leader Venorica “Vee” Tucker and launched in partnership with iF, A Foundation for Radical Possibility, the program provides $1,000/month in no-strings-attached cash to workers in need.
Let’s GO DMV! is powered by a vibrant community of worker leaders, organizers, and funders committed to long-term systems change.

My Sister’s Place
My Sister’s Place is a longtime DC organization supporting survivors of domestic violence and their children. As part of its wraparound care, MSP is integrating guaranteed income into its services— recognizing that financial freedom is critical for survivors to heal and rebuild.
With trauma-informed support, case management, and now direct cash assistance, MSP helps survivors move from crisis to long-term stability— on their own terms.

Guaranteed, Together
Launched in July 2024 by The Social Justice School in collaboration with Mother’s Outreach Network, Guaranteed, Together is a school-based guaranteed income program that supports both students and their parents.
Fifteen families each receive $800/month for three months— no strings attached— alongside legal education, workshops, and resources to navigate harmful systems like family policing. The pilot explores how cash and community-centered support can strengthen family well-being and youth empowerment.
