Our Story
The DC Guaranteed Income Coalition was born from a simple but powerful belief: everyone deserves the freedom and dignity to meet their basic needs.
We are a growing alliance of advocates, nonprofits, and policy leaders united by a shared vision—one where economic security is not a privilege, but a right. Our work began in response to deep and persistent inequities in Washington, DC, where far too many families are locked out of opportunity due to systemic racism, income inequality, and decades of disinvestment.
In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the fragility of our safety net, we came together to explore solutions rooted in justice, community, and care. Guaranteed income—unrestricted cash support that affirms trust in people—emerged as a transformative approach to economic justice.
Since then, we’ve supported pilot programs, elevated the voices of recipients, and pushed for bold policy changes that center DC residents in shaping the future. We believe in solutions that are led by lived experience, grounded in local knowledge, and built for lasting impact.
